As those of you will know who have used Hanna's Dream, you'd have to go a long way before finding friendlier or better service. The items that they stock are special. For those of you who may not have heard of Frugi, a UK brand, I thought it would be useful to add some comments about Frugi. Before you ask - no I don't work for Frugi (or Hanna's Dream), I just love their clothes season upon season and just haven't found an organic clothing company to beat them. I've been using their items now for over 5 years and have always found them to be of really high quality, wash fabulously well, be supremely comfortable and just have such adorable attention to detail that adds that extra 'ahh' factor. They also have real eco-credentials, gained because they truly believe in it not just because it is becoming more fashionable. The items are organic certified and fair trade, they have degradable packaging and give 1% for the planet.

This season they have introduced organic denim and straightaway it has become a real favourite. This 'Eco Denim' is as they describe it, incredibly supple and really comfortable. I wish they did some in adult sizes! My little girl's favourite trousers are her Frugi jeans, they have a lovely jersey-lined waistband so no pinched skin it's also elasticated and has a little adjustment at the back so they really do fit well. To add that extra touch for girls they have pink embroidery on the back pockets. She just delights in wearing them adding that she's just like mummy! My boy also has the Frugi jeans and whilst he doesn't want to look like mummy he does reach for them and wear them from the cupboard, so that gives his stamp of approval.

The Eco Denim layered skirt is another favourite here, with the funky tights it is great for the cooler weather too and just that bit different. Now I have experienced the denim I just wished that I'd ordered the Pinafore Dress but that will have to be a later order!

For tops, my little girl's favourites are without doubt the Frugi Organic Lovebird Layered Tee and the Frugi Organic Merry-Go-Round Layered Tee, both go beautifully with the organic jeans and layered skirt. They both have really adorable prints and really helpfully, if your child's head is on the large side, poppers on the shoulder.

For boys there are a few things which really stand out for me, I've already mentioned the Eco Denim jeans, and the raccoon tee has to be seen to be adored! Incredibly soft and beautifully made it is the orange colour with the striking raccoon features that grabs your attention - it just jumps out at you!

The animo camo lined combat trousers are another great example of Frugi's attention to detail. Not only is the print made up of animals, which provides amusement on a car journey, but they have an animal on the back pocket - not sure whether it's an elk or moose but I'm sure you'll know. The trousers are extremely hard wearing, as they need to be with great boyish outdoor play, but at the same time are supple and soft. As an added winter bonus they are lined with jersey to help keep out the cold.

You can probably tell that I really do rate Frugi, it just is exceptional clothing. As a mum of three who has tried numerous organic clothing brands, it is just one that I know you'll love if you try, and I have no hesitation in recommending. --Helen, UK

Organic Clothing - The New Norm?

Well, we keep hearing news from the CPSC, and court orders are coming too - all gearing up for tomorrow, February 10, 2009, and attempting to lend a hand at the interpretation of the new law (CPSIA) by all us folks who are affected by it. The guidance posted by the CPSC today gives some further help. We've been crazy busy here, scanning for small businesses who are looking for peace of mind in knowing that their products are safe are legal for sale after tomorrow.
My thoughts have been wandering in a particular direction today - is it possible that organic clothing will finally become the new norm in America? Certified organic clothing has been around for years and has always been the purest clothing available for our children. Many European standards meet and exceed all that we are trying to accomplish through this new law (don't we have so much to learn from our friends on the other side of the pond!) Perhaps we are coming on a time when organic clothing will become the guiding standard in purity for all children's clothing!
My husband and I have screened for lead for the past few days now with the XRF machine and have been amazed to find the amounts of lead hiding in snaps, zippers, bling and other embellishments in clothing - and our children's jewelry and toys! BTW, stay tuned...we'll post a picture of our "lead memorial" jar we have been filling, with items from our house (most of which we did not buy- they just crept into our house as gifts and prizes) that we discovered are full of lead! What an eye opening experience it has been not just for us, but for our two girls (ages 6 and 8). The lead jar was an alternative to tossing items into the trash, and a way for them to continue and treasure those gifts from afar which will never again adorn their precious hands and necks. We'll get a picture up here soon, but for now, back to scanning!

Pressing on through the CPSIA

We are excited to let you know that some of our manufacturers are coming up with solutions to allow them to continue selling their pure organic clothing for the time being without needing to go through the extra hoops of expensive testing. Most of the European manufacturers we work with have certifications that already meet and exceed the CPSIA requirements, and many of our US manufacturers are using XRF technology to inexpensively test their clothing. The XRF testing is also what we are doing with our current inventory. All of this is getting us by for the time being - and we continue to pray for changes in the law that will allow wonderful companies like the ones we work with to continue to sell their extremely pure organic clothing without having to undergo expensive third party testing. That requirement kicks in August 14, 2009, so we'll be watching for clarifications and exemptions from the CPSIA committee and will keep you posted on changes.

We are keeping our endangered clothing page current as we continue talking to our manufacturers to determine if we can restock their clothing as this new law takes effect - as we hear positive news, we remove items from the endangered clothing list. Hopefully the entire page can disappear soon!

TO OUR CUSTOMER FAMILY: Here at Hanna's Dream, we are committed to continuing to provide pure organic children's clothing to the families of America. If you are reading this, you most likely have come across some startling news in the past few weeks about the enactment of recent consumer protection legislation here in the US. Beginning February 10, 2009, all children's products (including organic clothing), must be tested to show a lead level of 600 ppm or less (in August the amount drops to 300 ppm). There are also strict labeling requirements that will be taking effect in the future. The law is broad and extremely complicated, and it the scope and magnitude are enormous. There is no reason to believe that certified organic clothing contains any lead, but in accordance with the new law, we will be making every effort to test all our current inventory to have it certified as legal for sale.

We have been contacting our manufacturers, in particular our overseas partners, and have found most of them are just now becoming aware of the fact that they will need to conduct additional testing of their already certified clothing to continue to sell here in the United States. The future availability of organic clothing from Europe is in serious jeopardy. For that reason, we have put together a page on our website entitled "Endangered Clothing" to give you a glimpse of the clothing that might be difficult to find in the US in the future. We will continue to press on and partner with manufacturers with the hope that we will be able to continue to provide their superior products to the families of America.

New Law that Will Affect Children's Organic Clothing!

The Consumer Product Safety Information Act (CPSIA) is due to take effect on February 10, 2009. The CPSIA has lots of different requirements regarding testing for lead and phthalates of all products (including organic clothing) intended for children age 12 and under. Under the very important auspices of child safety, the Act may have grave unintended consequences: fewer choices for families who are looking for organic clothing and natural toys. Many retailers of children's clothing (including small businesses like our own) have expressed fears that they won't be able stay in business due to the burdensome cost of testing and certification pursuant to the proposed legislation.

Currently there is a lot of uncertainty about how exactly this law will "look" once February 10 arrives, and lawmakers are at work clarifying the details. But our family here at Hanna's Dream is currently preparing by analyzing our inventory and contacting our manufacturers to determine our next steps. Next weekend we will send out another email with more specifics regarding our store and what items will be no longer available in the future. We are also stocking up a bit, personally speaking, on clothing for our two girls (including removing items from our own stock) as undoubtedly there are some huge changes on the horizon.

We wanted you, or customer family, to be informed of these potential changes as there is still time - time to email Congress, spread the word so we can all be informed, and stock up on favorite organic clothing and natural toy items that may be difficult to buy in America in the future.

Time to introduce another new brand to Hanna's Dream! I have searched high and low, after requests from several customers, for plain, non-dyed organic socks and tights. Yippee, we found some (thanks to a dear customer who is always keeping her eyes out for us!)!!

The socks and cotton tights are made in Germany by Hirsch Natur of beautiful quality 100% organic cotton. The wool tights have 50% organic wool and 50% organic cotton, just the right combo for superior warmth without the itchies. If you've been looking for organic school socks, come on in and check them out! And the thick organic cotton socks are the perfect winter weight - super soft too! The socks and tights are all completely dye-free and will match with everything.

Introducing Kite Kids from the UK!

Over the next few days I will be taking some time to introduce a few new lines that are coming to Hanna's Dream. I am excited beyond belief that we are finally starting to find some gorgeous, high quality organic fashions for bigger kids!!! It is thrilling! Not only do we have two big kids to clothes ourselves, but it is just the thing we want to carry in our store!

So, today I want to introduce Kite Kids, a super fun line out of the UK. They produce beautiful and contemporary styled childrenswear which compromises nothing by being made from organic cotton (so they look cool and trendy!). Their designs are inspired by their love of the outdoors – big skies and fantastic beaches – so their clothes are built to last whether worn on beach, mountain or sofa! We love the light hearted slogans on their clothing, encouraging us all to take care of the earth and have fun too!

Sarah is already thrilled about her new Kite Kids clothing and can't wait for the cold weather to arrive (silly girl!). We were able to get just a few things for our store for this season, mostly in sizes 6/7, 8/9 and 10/11 (organic pajamas for boys and girls, and organic long sleeve tees for girls). Enjoying the Seasons

Have any of you noticed how many people rush the seasons?? Even my girls, bless their hearts, started asking when the snow was coming back as soon as the sun had shown its face for a week or two! We find it difficult to slow down and enjoy the moment. End of summer sales start in June, and by August we are already buying our winter gear! More and more, we miss out on the NOW by looking months ahead.
Well, we have discovered through the years that the organic clothing industry tends to buck the system in this regard, especially the European market. In the next few weeks, our autumn/winter stock will start rolling in (just in time to start thinking about some cooler weather). We've got some great new brands for you to try out in big kids sizes (up to 11 years!): Kite Kids, Look Organics, Hirsch Natur, Nixie, Twirls and Twigs, and children's Seasalt Organic Cotton! We'll have some great winter coats by Serendipity, lots of beautiful organic cotton, and some new recycled fiber clothing that we are very excited about. So much to look forward to. It's Cooooold Up Here!

So, how's the weather in your neck of the woods? I just had to snap a quick picture this afternoon to show you Sarah in her Tatty Bumpkin set (and our dog, Anika!). How could she wear a hoodie and warm pants in June, you ask? Because it is currently 42 degrees outside!! Gotta love Spring in North Idaho (and be ready for any weather that might come!).

This fabric that Tatty Bumpkin has come up with is AMAZING. We are all about texture here at our house...the softer, the better! And this blend of organic cotton, oko tex certified cotton, and bamboo, is the softest I have felt anywhere (hands down!). I just WISH I had a hoodie too!

Sarah is about 49 1/2 inches tall (almost 8 years old), and she is wearing the 6/7 in this set. Love this generous sizing! She'll be wearing the pants for sure for at least another year!

And I had to post today because I have never before put these pants on sale - today they are our daily special and are 20% off! Very limited quantities, and with the status of the dollar these days, I probably won't be ordering any more Tatty Bumpkin (from the UK) for awhile!

Looking for an adorable organic summer dress?

We are going to be posting here quite often to cut down on the number of emails we send out to our big ol' customer list. Check often to be the first to know about new shipments, new posts to our gently used page (and let me tell you, our used clothing sells so fast, you will want to be the first to know!), and for occasional opinion polls on new clothing we are looking at purchasing for our store and pre-order clothing.

Today, we have a gorgeous dress that we are offering up for pre-order! This dress is made by Maria's Organic Babies, a brand new company out of Italy. Let me tell you, I am so impressed by this dress! Made of a sturdy 100% organic woven cotton in the cutest polka dot print. Here's the best part -- the sizing is amazing! There are two button holes on the back (on the strap that holds the halter together) to allow for a perfect fit. The smocking is also great...no gaps at all. AND, just wash and hang to dry - NO ironing (yippee!)

Here is our 5 1/2 year old, Grace, wearing the 5/6y. Super cute and a perfect fit with tons of length (I would probably even size down to the 4/5y since it is so long - but it does not gap at all!)

Now, here is Sarah, our almost 8 year old in the SAME exact dress! The 5/6y fits her just perfectly too, and the length is still great! By the way, Sarah usually wears ONLY jersey cotton dresses and is very, very picky about fabrics. She has never worn a smocked dress before, nor has she ever been interested in anything that is not soft jersy cotton -- and guess what? She LOVES this dress! That is amazing to me, but I guess you would have to live with her day in and day out to know how amazing that is.

You could easily get 2-3 summers out of this dress...

Earth Day Drawing & Tips

Well, it is about time! We decided that we should enter the blog world, to facilitate our communication with our customers (what a great way to quickly share news of sales and new products!) and share our family news. I have no clue what I am doing though, so hang onto your seats!

We held an earth day drawing last month (congrats to the 3 winners!) and folks sent in some great earth saving tips that we wanted to share. Hopefully you can catch a new idea (or be renewed in old ideas that have gone by the wayside!)

I make sure to pass on my children's used clothing to people who can very much use them. I also very much enjoy going to used clothing stores/consignment shops where I LOVE finding a great steal on an item for my kids that would cost a bundle of money if purchased new!

Use cloth diapers; buy used/recycled clothing; clean with borax, vinegar, baking soda and water; use the library!; grow your own vegetables and fruits.

We are trying really hard lately to take our own bags to the grocery store. I love the feeling that we are not just hoarding all those lovely paper sacks but using them over and over. We have many nice paper ones because I haven't been able to throw them away for years so even though they aren't fabric, we are not contributing to trash.

I like to walk to the grocery store. The shopping cart is much larger than the basket under the stroller, so I have to think about each item, "Do I really need this?" Plus, it's good exercise.

One of my favorite enviromental tips is to make sure you print on both sides of your printer paper so you save trees and money! There are lots of other things I can think of... buy local organic food, supporting local farmers is a big one! And lessen your footprint by riding public transportation-metro!

Use those coffee grounds to perk up your garden and house plants!

I have 2 toddlers that get dirty all the time, so instead of using wet wipes like some of my friends, I purchased inexpensive packs of washcloths- to use either on the go or at home. Pre wet is more convenient on the go, but there is usually a source of water even out and about. I just dislike the idea of all those little wipes in our landfills!

COMPOSTING! Turning food "trash" into rich food for the garden!

About a year ago we eliminated papertowels from our kitchen completely. I now take clothing that's too worn or stained to donate, and cut it up into rags that we keep in the kitchen to use in place of paper towels, then I just
throw them in with the laundry and we reuse them. We're also extremely
concientious of the amount of driving we do. We plan everything in advance and run all of our errands at once to minimize our gas consuption.

We are installing wood flooring in our entire upstairs. At a fraction of the
cost, we will be recycling wood from someone elses house into our own
environmentally (or nearly) friendly home. It's a beautiful maple (complete with a few marks from the previous owner) and will not only save our environment from more off-gassing but also our trees!

My favorite thing right now is Freecycle. I know that it requires the use of
electricity and a computer, but I think it is so great that people, who have
things that aren't ready for a landfill, can send an email out and have
someone pick it up and fulfill a need that they have. I have been able to
pass on a few things, and have been able to acquire some things as well that I needed.

I also love "pay it forward" (I think that's the term). We have received alot
of nice clothes from people that have really helped us with our family

I use containers to store leftovers (etc.) in - instead of plastic baggies -
whenever I can. When I must use the baggies, I wash them out and reuse
them.

Walk to school! So easy to do and great exercise, too.
